baltimoreoriole.jpgBaltimore Oriole by Salmon Brook8 viewsI've been seeing and hearing quite a few of these jaunty fellows lately and thought this one who surprised me by the brook should be shared.Ed Hodgson
bathingmallard.jpgBathing beauty8 viewsThis mallard's frenzied splashing with his wings became all the more dramatic as he created a blue accent in the golden reflections of late autumn trees around the pondEd Hodgson
bluebird116.jpgWinter Bluebird 20169 viewsLast month I spotted this fellow visiting our birdbath one morning. He was cooperative enough to pause in our maple tree as he finished his visit so I was able to capture a few images. Exposure was a bit of a challenge as he was strongly backlit and our sunroom windows made fill flash a bad option, but between what I could do with the camera ans a bit of post processing, I don't think this worked out too badly.Ed Hodgson
bluebird2.jpgThe Bluebird in May8 viewsOn an afternoon walk in the McLean refuge today, I was delighted to hear this fellow singing in a tree near the entrance from 10-202 and to get a decent look at him. Bluebirds are always a special treat to me.Ed Hodgson

cantwait.jpgThey Can't Wait Either13 viewsA few days ago, I took this photo of hundreds of birds lined up at the edge of the open water on lower Congamond Lake to wait for spring to really arrive. I thought it captured an impatience we all share about now. It was an interesting melange - I spotted hooded and common mergansers in the crowd as well as the predominant canada geese and mallards. Ed Hodgson
cardinalmay.jpgCardinal - May morning mist11 viewsI spotted this handsome fellow while exploring along Salmon Brook at the park on a somewhat misty morning not too long ago. I like the soft background that resulted from the mist and limited depth of field.Ed Hodgson

cormorantlaunch.jpgWe Have Lift-off!9 viewsI photographed this cormorant while canoeing on Ninigret Pond in Rhode Island. It doesn't look particularly graceful, but certainly strikes me as dynamic.Ed Hodgson
courtingturkey.jpgGoin' Courting10 viewsOn my way over to visit my Mom at McLean the other day I spotted a flock of turkeys in the field off Barndoor Hills Road in Simsbury. A little telephoto work revealed this fine fellow all dressed up for courting - something I've never seen live before.2 commentsEd Hodgson
Cuckoo.jpgBlack-billed Cuckoo9 viewsWhile walking along the rail trail in East Granby, I heard an unusual call and after a little patient searching spotted this Cuckoo in one of the trees between the trail and the marsh.Ed Hodgson

EasternPhoebe415.jpgSunlit Eastern Phoebe7 viewsThe birds are beginning to reappear along the rail trail through the marsh. Yesterday, the sunshine and absence of leaves created an unusual and I thought interesting backdrop for this Eastern Phoebe. Ed Hodgson
geeseinbronze.jpgGeese in Bronze7 viewsOn an early November afternoon, the foliage around Trout Pond in the McLean refuge gave some lovely reflected color to the water as the geese swam slowly about preparing for their evening fly-off.Ed Hodgson

goldfinch.jpgGoldfinch Treasure7 viewsThis American Goldfinch was among quite a few i saw enjoying the sunflowers in Granby's community garden area off Hungary Road Saturday morning.Ed Hodgson
goldfinch2.jpgOff His Feed7 viewsAS I was lining up this fellow for a photo, he slipped off his feeding perch on the sunflower and gave me a chance to capture his recovery flight back to where he really wanted to be.Ed Hodgson
GreatEgret2.jpgCaught One!7 viewsHe fished with remarkable success (I saw him catch at least four in a couple of minutes) despite the interference of several red winged blackbirds that repeatedly dove at the egret.Ed Hodgson
GreatEgret3.jpgGreat Egret - Glen Rock, NJ11 viewsOn my most recent trip to New Jersey, I visited a local park with a pond to look for birds and dragonflies. I was surprised when a great Egret flew in and began fishing the pond.2 commentsEd Hodgson
